The Minnesota Vikings are reportedly re‑signing Cam Akers, a former Rams running back and Super Bowl LVI champion, for a third stint with the team — this time to the practice squad

The **Minnesota Vikings** are reportedly re‑signing former Rams running back **Cam Akers** for a third stint with the team—this time to their **practice squad**—in response to injury woes among their running backs.

The move comes as the Vikings placed veteran RB **Aaron Jones** on injured reserve after a hamstring injury in their loss to the Falcons. Jones will be sidelined for at least **four games**, creating an immediate need for depth in the backfield. ([Reuters][1]) With **Ty Chandler** already on IR (also due to a hamstring issue), the Vikings’ running back room was left thin behind starter **Jordan Mason.

Akers, 26, first joined Minnesota in 2023 when he was traded from the Rams. He returned again via trade from the Texans in 2024.  He most recently signed with the New Orleans Saints but was released in the final roster cuts prior to the 2025 regular season.

Akers’ familiarity with both the Vikings’ offense and head coach Kevin O’Connell (they worked together in Los Angeles when Akers was with the Rams) makes him a logical short‑term option. ([NBC Sports][5]) On the practice squad, Akers gives the Vikings flexibility—they can elevate him to the active roster for games as needed while preserving spots elsewhere.

The move underscores the tenuous nature of NFL depth charts, particularly at running back. While Jordan Mason will carry the load, Akers offers a managed veteran presence who could help bridge the gap until Jones and Chandler are healthy again.
