Brisbane Broncos coach Michael Maguire is set to reposition Selwyn Cobbo to the right wing for the upcoming 2025 NRL season, aiming to rejuvenate the young star’s form. This strategic move reunites Cobbo with right centre Kotoni Staggs, a partnership that proved formidable in the 2023 season, collectively amassing 33 tries.
Cobbo, renowned for his speed, power, and height, experienced a challenging 2024 season, during which he was trialed in the centre position. Despite a standout performance against the Dolphins, where he scored two tries and ran 200 metres, the overall season did not meet expectations, with the Broncos finishing 12th. Maguire believes that returning Cobbo to the wing will allow him to focus on his strengths and rebuild confidence. He stated, “Selwyn has come back in good shape. He is in a really good frame of mind. I’m looking forward to this next month and seeing how he develops.”
The Broncos are also keen on securing Cobbo’s future with the club, as his contract is set to expire at the end of 2025. Teammate Jesse Arthars has advocated for retaining both Cobbo and Staggs, emphasizing their importance to the team’s culture and leadership. Arthars expressed, “I don’t want to see them leave… They are a big part of this club.” However, salary cap constraints pose a challenge, especially with recent high-profile signings and contract extensions, including Reece Walsh’s four-year deal and the acquisition of Ben Hunt.
As the Broncos prepare for the 2025 season, Maguire has introduced intense training sessions to instill accountability and adapt to new strategies. Despite concerns from the NRL regarding player welfare due to the use of vomit buckets during training, Broncos CEO assures adherence to guidelines, prioritizing player. The club remains optimistic that these efforts, along with strategic player positioning like Cobbo’s return to the wing, will lead to a successful season.
