Netflix has officially greenlit a prequel to The Last Kingdom, titled Seven Kings Must Die: Origins, focusing on the early years of Uhtred of Bebbanburg. This new series aims to delve into the formative experiences that shaped the legendary warrior, chronicling his childhood, training, and the events that set him on the path toward becoming one of Saxon England’s most formidable figures. Slated for release in late 2025, the prequel promises to explore deeper layers of Uhtred’s identity—his torn loyalties between Viking and Saxon cultures, and his early struggles with honor, faith, and family.

Set against the harsh backdrop of 9th-century Northumbria, Origins will introduce a younger cast, including a fresh face to portray the adolescent Uhtred, as well as new characters from both Viking and Saxon factions. The series will explore themes of identity, survival, and destiny, all while maintaining the gritty realism and political intrigue that fans of The Last Kingdom have come to expect.

Production is already underway, with much of the original creative team returning, including producers from Carnival Films and historical consultants who worked on the main series. Filming locations include parts of Hungary and the UK, continuing the tradition of sweeping landscapes and authentic set designs. Netflix executives have expressed high confidence in the project, noting the enduring popularity of the franchise and its global fanbase.

With The Last Kingdom having concluded its five-season run and the follow-up film Seven Kings Must Die wrapping up Uhtred’s later life, this prequel serves as both an origin story and a way to expand the rich historical world. For fans eager to learn more about the boy who became Bebbanburg’s lord, Seven Kings Must Die: Origins promises to be a compelling new chapter.
