Mark Selby, the four-time World Snooker Champion and one of the sport’s most resilient competitors, has announced his intention to retire following the 2025–2026 season. This decision comes after a period of introspection and ongoing struggles with mental health, which Selby has candidly discussed in recent years.

In April 2024, after a first-round exit at the World Championship, Selby revealed that he was contemplating retirement due to a “mental block” that was affecting his performance and enjoyment of the game. He stated, “For me, my happiness is the most important thing. Everything I’ve achieved and I still can’t go out there, let myself play and enjoy it.”

Despite these challenges, Selby demonstrated his enduring skill by winning the 2025 Championship League Invitational, where he achieved his sixth career maximum break. However, he acknowledged that his passion for the game had waned, leading to his decision to step away from professional play.

Selby’s career has been marked by remarkable achievements, including 24 ranking titles and nine Triple Crown victories, placing him among snooker’s all-time greats. His tactical acumen and mental fortitude earned him the nickname “The Jester from Leicester.”

Looking ahead, Selby has expressed interest in remaining connected to the sport, potentially through commentary or mentorship roles. His legacy as a champion and advocate for mental health awareness will continue to inspire both fans and fellow players.

As the snooker world prepares to bid farewell to one of its most iconic figures, Selby’s contributions to the game and his openness about personal struggles have left an indelible mark on the sport.
