LSU Forward Sa’Myah Smith Enters Transfer Portal

LSU women’s basketball forward Sa’Myah Smith has entered the NCAA transfer portal, adding another significant departure from Kim Mulkey’s squad. Smith, a 6-foot-2 sophomore, played a key role for the Tigers before suffering a season-ending knee injury in December.

Before her injury, Smith was an important part of LSU’s frontcourt rotation, averaging 6.7 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks per game. Her athleticism and defensive presence made her a valuable asset for the Tigers, who were defending their national championship title. However, her sophomore campaign was cut short after she tore her ACL during a game against Virginia Tech on Dec. 2, 2023.

Smith’s decision to enter the portal comes amid a period of transition for LSU. The Tigers have already seen several roster changes, with star forward Angel Reese declaring for the WNBA Draft and other players exploring their options. Mulkey will now have to navigate these departures as she looks to rebuild LSU’s roster for another deep tournament run.

A former five-star recruit from Texas, Smith was expected to have a bright future at LSU. With her combination of size, athleticism, and defensive versatility, she will likely be a sought-after player in the transfer portal. Several top programs in need of frontcourt depth could pursue her as she rehabs from her injury.

It remains to be seen where Smith will land next, but her departure is another notable loss for an LSU team that is undergoing significant changes heading into the 2024-25 season.
