**“It’s One of the Greatest Cities Ever, It’s Given the World So Much”: Black Sabbath Awarded the Freedom of Birmingham**

In a moment as heavy as one of their iconic riffs, Black Sabbath — the legendary pioneers of heavy metal — have been officially awarded the Freedom of the City of Birmingham. The ceremony, held in their hometown, celebrated not just the band’s massive influence on music, but also their deep roots in the industrial heart of England.

Formed in Aston, Birmingham in the late 1960s, Black Sabbath revolutionized rock music with their dark, doomy sound and socially charged lyrics. Now, over 50 years later, the city that raised them has honored their global impact and enduring legacy.

During the ceremony, guitarist Tony Iommi called the honor “incredible,” saying, “This city shaped who we are. It’s one of the greatest cities ever, and it’s given the world so much — not just through us, but through generations of hardworking people and brilliant creativity.” Frontman Ozzy Osbourne added, “No matter where we went in the world, we always carried Birmingham with us.”

The Freedom of the City is one of the highest honors Birmingham can bestow, typically reserved for individuals or groups who’ve made exceptional contributions. For Black Sabbath, it’s a long-overdue recognition of a band that not only helped define a genre but also put Birmingham on the global cultural map.

The city has also unveiled plans for a permanent tribute — including a commemorative bench featuring cast-iron figures of the band — symbolizing their legacy in the very material that fueled Birmingham’s industrial rise.

As the founding fathers of heavy metal, Black Sabbath took the gritty soul of Birmingham and transformed it into something immortal. With this honor, the city finally returns the favor — giving Sabbath their rightful place in its hist

ory forever.
