Ohio State’s defensive coordinator, Jim Knowles, is set to depart the Buckeyes to join Penn State’s coaching staff. According to reports, Knowles has agreed to a three-year contract with the Nittany Lions, earning $3.1 million annually, making him the highest-paid defensive coordinator in college football.

During his tenure at Ohio State, Knowles transformed the defense into a formidable unit. In the 2024-25 season, the Buckeyes boasted the nation’s top defense, allowing an average of 251.1 yards and 12.2 points per game. This defensive prowess was instrumental in Ohio State’s national championship victory, culminating in a 34-23 win over Notre Dame.

Despite Ohio State’s offer exceeding $2.5 million per year to retain him, Knowles opted for Penn State’s more lucrative proposal. His decision comes as Penn State aims to bolster its defense after a season that saw them reach the College Football Playoff semifinals, only to fall to Notre Dame. Knowles will replace Tom Allen, who departed for Clemson’s defensive coordinator position after one season with the Nittany Lions.

Knowles’ coaching career spans several programs. Before his successful stint at Ohio State, he served as the defensive coordinator at Oklahoma State and Duke and was the head coach at Cornell. His defensive strategies have consistently led to significant improvements, making him a sought-after coordinator in college football.

Ohio State celebrated its national championship with a ceremony at Ohio Stadium, where Coach Ryan Day and players addressed fans. The event also marked farewells, with several players declaring for the NFL draft and the announcement of Knowles’ departure. Despite these changes, the Buckeyes are poised for continued success, with incoming talent and key players returning for the next season.

As Jim Knowles transitions to Penn State, both programs anticipate the impact of this significant coaching change on their future performances.
