Veteran playmaker Ben Hunt has officially rejoined the Brisbane Broncos on a two-year deal, marking a significant return to the club where he began his NRL career. Hunt, 34, previously played for the Broncos from 2009 to 2017, amassing 187 appearances before his seven-year tenure with the St George Illawarra Dragons.

The decision to part ways with the Dragons came after the club declined to offer Hunt a multi-year extension beyond 2025. Following his release, Hunt was courted by several clubs, including the Sydney Roosters and the Dolphins. Ultimately, he chose to return to Brisbane, signing a contract reportedly worth around $600,000 per season.

Hunt’s return is expected to bolster the Broncos’ lineup, particularly in the halves. He is anticipated to partner with captain Adam Reynolds, creating a formidable combination of experience and leadership. This move comes at a crucial time, as regular five-eighth Ezra Mam faces a potential suspension for the initial months of the upcoming season due to a drug-driving charge.

Reflecting on his return, Hunt expressed a sense of “unfinished business” with the Broncos, referencing the near miss in the 2015 grand final, where Brisbane suffered a golden-point loss to the North Queensland Cowboys. “To be able to finish my career at the Broncos is something that I never thought I’d have the opportunity to do and I’ll cherish it,” Hunt said. “I never thought this would happen. The chance now to head back and chase that premiership together is a dream come true.”

Broncos captain Adam Reynolds welcomed Hunt’s return, highlighting his leadership and X-factor qualities. “Ben’s a great player, with what he brings to the football field. He’s a leader off the football field as well, which is super important in any organisation,” Reynolds stated. “He’s an X-factor and among some of the game’s greats, and obviously it would be a big benefit to get him here to the club.”

Hunt’s versatility is a significant asset for the Broncos. Primarily a halfback, he is also adept at playing hooker, providing the team with valuable options in their lineup. His return not only strengthens the squad for the upcoming season but also offers a seamless transition plan, especially with Reynolds contemplating retirement at the end of 2025.

Off the field, Hunt’s decision was influenced by personal considerations, including his established real estate portfolio in Queensland. He owns properties in Bridgeman Downs and Newrybar, further solidifying his ties to the region.

As the Broncos prepare for the 2025 season under new coach Michael Maguire, Hunt’s return is seen as a pivotal move to enhance the team’s prospects and aim for premiership success.
