BREAKING NEWS: Bruins GM Don Sweeney Donates \$12.9 Million to Homeless Shelter
In an extraordinary act of generosity, Don Sweeney, General Manager of the Boston Bruins, has donated an astonishing \$12.9 million to support homeless shelters across the Greater Boston area.
The donation, announced earlier today, marks one of the largest personal contributions to homelessness relief in Massachusetts history. According to a press release from the Bruins organization, Sweeney made the donation through a private charitable trust, with funds earmarked for housing, mental health services, addiction recovery, and job training programs for individuals experiencing homelessness.
“This city has given me and my family so much over the years,” Sweeney said in a brief statement. “It’s time I give something back to the people who need it most.”
Local officials and nonprofit leaders have praised the move as a game-changer for the region’s efforts to combat homelessness. “This donation will help stabilize hundreds—if not thousands—of lives,” said Maria Gonzalez, director of the Boston Housing Outreach Program. “We can now expand our shelters, increase support services, and move more people into permanent housing.”
Sweeney, who has served as GM of the Bruins since 2015 and is a former NHL defenseman, has been quietly involved in philanthropic efforts for years. However, today’s announcement is by far his most public and substantial contribution to date.
Bruins players and staff also expressed admiration for their GM. “He’s always talked about community and accountability,” said Bruins captain Brad Marchand. “Today, he led by example.”
The funds will begin distribution to selected nonprofits this fall. Sweeney has declined further interviews, saying the spotlight should remain on the people and organizations working every day to make a difference.
