BREAKING NEWS: Jarren Duran Pledges \$5 Million to Combat Homelessness in Boston
Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran is making headlines off the field with a bold and heartfelt commitment to the city he calls home. Duran announced today that he is pledging \$5 million from his latest sponsorship deals to support homeless shelters and transitional housing across Boston.
The initiative, developed in collaboration with local nonprofits and city officials, will fund the creation of 100 new permanent housing units and provide 200 additional emergency shelter beds. The funds will also support wraparound services, including mental health care, job training, and addiction recovery programs.
Speaking at a press conference outside a downtown shelter, Duran appeared visibly emotional.
“This city has given me everything,” he said. “I’ve walked these streets, I’ve seen the struggles people face every day. I’ve also seen the strength and resilience of this community. This is about giving people a real shot — not just a warm bed for a night, but a path forward.”
Duran, who has previously volunteered at shelters and food banks, said the decision to act on a larger scale came after conversations with advocates and people experiencing homelessness.
“This isn’t charity — it’s solidarity,” he added. “Everyone deserves dignity, safety, and a place to call home.”
Mayor Michelle Wu praised Duran’s efforts, calling the pledge “a powerful example of what it means to lead with heart.”
Construction on the new housing units is expected to begin early next year, with several shelter expansions already underway. Duran said he hopes his actions inspire others in professional sports and beyond to invest in their communities.
“We’re stronger together,” he said. “Let’s build something better — together.”
