BREAKING: “Mason Cox has been told look at other options for next year. In contract limbo for next season….

Mason Cox’s future at Collingwood has taken a surprising turn, with the American ruck-forward reportedly told to begin looking at other options for 2026 as his contract status remains in limbo. The 33-year-old, who has been a cult hero at the Magpies since debuting in 2016, finds himself facing significant uncertainty after being informed by the club that there is currently no guarantee of a new deal on the table.

Cox, standing at 211cm, has long been a unique presence in the AFL, transitioning from college basketball in the United States to become a premiership player and fan favourite in Australia. Known for his towering marks and ability to impact in key finals, he has carved out a career that many once thought improbable. However, as Collingwood looks to balance its list for the future, younger tall options such as Aiden Begg and Ash Johnson are emerging as priorities for development, placing Cox in a precarious spot.

Despite the uncertainty, Cox has made it clear in the past that he is determined to play on as long as his body allows. His experience, versatility, and leadership remain valuable assets, and rival clubs in need of a tall target or depth ruckman could see him as an attractive short-term option.

For the Magpies, the decision looms as a difficult one. Cox has played more than 100 games, featured in grand finals, and built a strong connection with the black-and-white faithful. Yet list management pressures and the need to plan for the long term may mean a sentimental farewell is the more likely outcome.

As the off-season unfolds, all eyes will be on Cox’s next move — whether he earns a lifeline at Collingwood or takes his talents elsewhere for one final chapter in an already remarkable career.
