LSU is making a strong push this offseason to position itself as a national title contender in 2024. Brian Kelly and his staff have been aggressive in recruiting, the transfer portal, and coaching hires, all with the goal of elevating the Tigers back to the top of the college football world.
One of LSU’s biggest moves has been revamping its defense. The Tigers struggled on that side of the ball in 2023, finishing near the bottom of the SEC in key defensive metrics. To address this, Kelly brought in Blake Baker as the new defensive coordinator. Baker, who previously served as Missouri’s defensive coordinator, helped turn the Tigers into a top-tier SEC defense last season. His ability to develop talent and implement an aggressive scheme should be a major boost.
LSU has also made significant additions through the transfer portal. The Tigers landed former Louisiana-Lafayette star Jordan Jefferson to bolster the defensive line, as well as cornerback Denver Harris, a former five-star recruit. On offense, Garrett Nussmeier is expected to take over at quarterback following Jayden Daniels’ departure to the NFL. The coaching staff has expressed confidence in Nussmeier’s ability to lead a high-powered attack, and he will have plenty of weapons, including star wide receiver Malik Nabers, if he returns, and a strong offensive line.
Recruiting remains a major focus, and LSU has secured commitments from several top prospects, including five-star defensive lineman Dominick McKinley. Kelly understands that to win in the SEC, depth and talent are essential, and he is ensuring that LSU remains one of the most competitive programs in the country.
With these moves, LSU is doing everything it can to build a championship-caliber team. If the defensive improvements pay off and Nussmeier lives up to expectations, the Tigers could be a legitimate contender in 2024.
