BIG DEAL: Reece Walsh extends with Brisbane Broncos to 2029… See more

Brisbane Broncos’ star fullback, Reece Walsh, has solidified his future with the club by signing a four-year contract extension, ensuring his stay at Red Hill until the end of the 2029 NRL season. This agreement, valued at approximately $5 million, elevates Walsh to the status of the highest-paid player in the Broncos’ history.

Walsh, 22, has been a pivotal figure for the Broncos since his return to the club in 2023. His dynamic performances were instrumental in Brisbane’s journey to the 2023 grand final and earned him a debut in the State of Origin series for Queensland the same year. Despite a challenging 2024 season marred by injuries, including concussions and a broken hand, Walsh’s commitment to the team remained unwavering.

Expressing his enthusiasm about the extension, Walsh stated, “I’ve wanted to play for the Broncos since I was a little kid, so I’m just really excited to be here and looking forward to getting into preseason and Round 1.” He emphasized his dedication to hard work and his aspiration to lead the team to future successes, both on and off the field.

Broncos’ Chief Executive, Dave Donaghy, lauded Walsh’s decision, noting, “It’s terrific news that Reece has re-committed to our club—he’s certainly proven himself to be an exciting player with plenty of potential.” Donaghy highlighted Walsh’s journey from the Broncos Academy to becoming a key player in both the NRL and the State of Origin arena.

The contract extension also signifies a strategic move by the Broncos to secure their core talent amidst potential interest from rival clubs. By finalizing the deal before the November 1 deadline, the Broncos ensured that Walsh remained off the open market, where he was anticipated to attract significant attention.

Looking ahead, Walsh is eager to collaborate with the Broncos’ new head coach, Michael Maguire. He has already engaged in discussions with Maguire, focusing on the importance of hard work and the shared goal of bringing premierships to the club. Walsh remarked, “I’ve had a few conversations with Madge and hard work is one thing he touches on a lot—I can’t wait to be around the boys again and get stuck into it together.”

This extension not only secures a key player for the Broncos but also reinforces the club’s commitment to building a team capable of achieving sustained success in the NRL.
