Alex “Ziggy” Ziegler, a Butler native and crowd-favorite bat trickster for the Savannah Bananas, was visibly emotional as he stepped onto the field at PNC Park on Friday night. For the lifelong baseball fan, performing in front of a packed hometown crowd at a Major League ballpark was a dream come true.

Ziegler is part of the Savannah Bananas, a wildly popular exhibition baseball team known for their unique twist on the game. Their version, called Banana Ball, blends athleticism with entertainment — think dancing players, choreographed routines, and rules designed to speed up the game and maximize fun.

“It’s baseball like you’ve never seen it before,” said Ziegler. “To be able to bring that energy to Pittsburgh, and to do it in front of friends and family, was something I’ll never forget.”

Joining Ziegler on the field was another local standout, Ryan Cox of Aliquippa. The two Western Pennsylvania natives soaked in the electric atmosphere at PNC Park as they signed autographs, posed for photos, and entertained thousands of fans with their signature moves.

For Ziegler, who has gained a following for his behind-the-back bat flips and high-energy personality, the night was about more than just baseball. “This team is about joy,” he said. “And seeing the smiles in the stands — especially from kids — that’s what it’s all about.”

The Savannah Bananas continue to tour the country, bringing their fast-paced, family-friendly brand of baseball to cities nationwide. But Friday night in Pittsburgh was special.

“I’ll carry this memory with me forever,” Ziegler said. “This city, this park — it felt like home.”
