In a significant development for NASCAR fans, 2017 Cup Series champion Martin Truex Jr. has announced his return to the sport in 2025, transitioning from retirement to a dual role as both driver and team co-owner.
Truex, who stepped away from full-time racing after the 2024 season, revealed plans to co-own a new team, tentatively named “Truex Performance Racing” (TPR). This venture aims to field at least one full-time car in the Cup Series, with aspirations to expand in the future. Truex emphasized his commitment to mentoring young drivers and contributing to the sport’s growth, stating, “Coming back as both a driver and co-owner is the perfect way to combine my experience on the track with my vision for the future of the sport” .
In addition to his ownership role, Truex made a notable return to the track by attempting to qualify for the 2025 Daytona 500 with Tricon Garage, a team making its Cup Series debut. Driving the No. 56 Toyota Camry, with longtime sponsor Bass Pro Shops and former crew chief Cole Pearn, Truex aimed to secure a spot in NASCAR’s most prestigious race. Despite his efforts, he was involved in an incident on lap 71, resulting in a 38th-place finish .
Truex’s return coincides with NASCAR’s announcement of a $600 million investment to support Cup Series teams over the coming years. This funding is intended to enhance team operations, technical development, and overall competitiveness within the sport .
As Truex embarks on this new chapter, his dual role as driver and team co-owner is poised to make a lasting impact on NASCAR, blending his on-track experience with a strategic vision for the sport’s future.
