Darren Lockyer’s Origin Call on Selwyn Cobbo Amid Billy Slater’s Maroons Headache

Queensland legend Darren Lockyer has weighed in on Selwyn Cobbo’s State of Origin prospects as Maroons coach Billy Slater faces a selection headache ahead of the 2025 series. With a wealth of outside backs at Queensland’s disposal, including the likes of Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, Xavier Coates, and Murray Taulagi, Cobbo’s place in the squad is under scrutiny.

Cobbo, who has been a regular fixture in Brisbane’s backline, has shown flashes of brilliance in the NRL but has also struggled with consistency. Lockyer, a key figure in Queensland’s selection panel, believes the 22-year-old still has plenty to offer at Origin level but must prove his worth in the early rounds of the season.

“There’s no doubt Selwyn has the talent to be a game-changer, but Origin is about more than just ability—it’s about reliability and doing the little things right,” Lockyer told reporters. “Billy [Slater] will be looking for players who can handle the pressure, and it’s up to Selwyn to put himself in that conversation.”

Slater faces tough decisions with Queensland’s backline depth stronger than ever. Reece Walsh is locked in at fullback, while Tabuai-Fidow could shift to the centres, opening a wing spot. Cobbo, known for his attacking flair, will need to outshine his competition at club level to secure his place.

With Origin selections looming, Cobbo’s form for the Broncos will be closely monitored. If he can deliver consistent performances, his X-factor could be too tempting for Slater to ignore. However, if he struggles, Queensland may opt for safer, more reliable options in their quest for another series win.
