Brisbane Broncos CEO Dave Donaghy faced the media on Tuesday afternoon, admitting the club was blindsided by the sudden departure of assistant coach Ben Te’o.
Speaking candidly, Donaghy revealed the Broncos “did not see it coming” and were left “shocked” by the unexpected decision. Te’o, a respected figure within the club’s coaching structure, had been viewed as a key part of the team’s long-term plans, making his abrupt exit all the more surprising.
“We’ve had open and honest conversations internally, but this one caught us off guard,” Donaghy said. “Ben has been a valuable contributor to our environment, and his departure wasn’t something we anticipated at this stage of the season.”
Te’o, a former international forward with experience in both rugby league and rugby union, transitioned into coaching after his playing career and quickly earned praise for his leadership and rapport with players. His influence had been particularly evident among the club’s younger forwards, many of whom credited him for their development.
While Donaghy declined to go into specific details surrounding the reasons for Te’o’s exit, he confirmed the club respected his decision and wished him well for the future. “We support Ben and whatever path he chooses next. He leaves here with our gratitude,” he added.
The Broncos will now move swiftly to address the vacancy within their coaching staff as they continue their campaign. Donaghy reassured fans that the club remains focused and united despite the disruption, emphasizing that preparations for upcoming fixtures would not be derailed.
As the season progresses, attention will turn to how the Broncos adjust without Te’o’s presence, with the club determined to maintain stability and build on their performances moving forward.
