BREAKING: Former Notre Dame OL makes huge transfer portal decision to Tennessee football… See more

Sam Pendleton, a redshirt sophomore offensive lineman from Notre Dame, has committed to the University of Tennessee, bolstering the Volunteers’ offensive line for the upcoming season. Pendleton, who started seven games for the Fighting Irish in 2024, entered the transfer portal shortly after Notre Dame’s season concluded with a loss to Ohio State in the National Championship game.

At 6-foot-4 and 305 pounds, Pendleton began the 2024 season as Notre Dame’s starting left guard, playing in the first seven games. However, his role changed in October when starting right guard Billy Schrauth returned from injury, leading to a reshuffling of the offensive line. Despite the changes, Pendleton’s decision to transfer was influenced by the opportunity for increased playing time at Tennessee.

During his redshirt freshman season, Pendleton played 492 snaps, earning a Pro Football Focus (PFF) grade of 63.2. He received a 65.9 grade in pass protection and a 64.0 grade in run blocking. For comparison, Tennessee’s starting left guard, Andrej Karic, earned a 69.2 grade, while right guard Javontez Spraggins earned a 64.2 grade during the 2024 season.

Tennessee has been actively seeking to strengthen its offensive line through the transfer portal. Pendleton’s commitment follows the addition of Arizona right guard Wendell Moe, who joined the Vols to fill the void left by Spraggins’ departure due to eligibility expiration. The left guard position remains uncertain, with Andrej Karic out of eligibility but appealing to the NCAA for a medical redshirt from the 2023 season.

Pendleton’s decision to transfer to Tennessee is a significant move for both the player and the program. His experience and skills are expected to contribute to the Volunteers’ offensive line depth, providing competition and potential starting opportunities in the upcoming season. This addition underscores Tennessee’s commitment to enhancing its roster through strategic transfers, aiming to build a competitive team for the 2025 season.
