BREAKING: Vols’ Secondary Takes Major Hit as Rickey Gibson III Out Indefinitely

Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel confirmed Monday that standout defensive back Rickey Gibson III will be “out for an extended period of time” after sustaining an injury in Saturday’s win over Syracuse. The sophomore DB went down late in the second quarter and did not return to the game. Heupel did not provide specifics on the injury but made it clear the Vols will be without one of their top defensive backs for the foreseeable future.

This comes as a major blow to a Tennessee secondary that is already thin. Gibson had emerged as one of the Vols’ most consistent performers on the back end, often tasked with shadowing the opponent’s top receiver. With Gibson sidelined and veteran corner Kamal Hadden already out for the season following shoulder surgery, Tennessee now finds itself without its top two defensive backs heading into the heart of SEC play.

“He’s been playing at a high level,” Heupel said of Gibson. “You hate it for the kid, but we’ve got to have the next guy ready.”

That “next man up” is expected to be a combination of young and unproven talent, including freshman Jermod McCoy and redshirt sophomore Christian Conyer. The Vols will need them to grow up fast with matchups against Florida, Georgia, and Alabama looming.

Tennessee’s defense, which has shown improvement in 2025, now faces its toughest challenge yet—maintaining stability in the secondary without its leaders. Depth, coaching, and defensive scheme will all be put to the test as the Vols try to stay competitive in a loaded SEC.

The road ahead just got tougher in Knoxville.
