Commitment: Virginia football lands Ohio State edge Mitchell Melton… See more

The University of Virginia football program has secured a significant addition to its defense with the transfer of Mitchell Melton from Ohio State University. Melton, a 6’4″, 261-pound linebacker from Silver Spring, Maryland, brings both experience and versatility to the Cavaliers’ roster.

Melton’s journey at Ohio State was marked by perseverance. After redshirting in 2020 and missing the entire 2021 and 2022 seasons due to injuries, he returned to the field in 2023, participating in 12 of 13 games. During that season, he recorded three solo tackles, all of which were tackles-for-loss, including his first career sack. In the 2024 season, Melton appeared in 13 games, contributing 12 tackles, six solo stops, two sacks, and 3.5 tackles for loss. Over his tenure with the Buckeyes, he amassed 15 tackles, nine solo tackles, three sacks, and 6.5 tackles for loss in 21 games.

Originally recruited as a linebacker, Melton transitioned to defensive end during his time at Ohio State, showcasing his adaptability. This flexibility is expected to benefit Virginia’s defensive schemes, as he can contribute in multiple roles within the front seven. His addition marks the eighth defensive transfer for the Cavaliers this offseason, highlighting the program’s commitment to strengthening its defense.

Melton’s decision to transfer comes after Ohio State’s national championship victory over Notre Dame. He entered the transfer portal on January 5, 2025, and officially committed to Virginia shortly after the championship game. With one year of eligibility remaining, Melton aims to make a significant impact with the Cavaliers, bringing leadership and experience to the team.

As Virginia continues to bolster its roster through strategic transfers, the addition of a player of Melton’s caliber underscores the program’s dedication to competing at a high level in the upcoming season.
