Louisville Boy Shot While ‘Ding Dong Ditching’ Charged with Criminal Mischief

A Louisville teenager who was shot while playing the prank known as “ding dong ditch” has now been charged with criminal mischief, authorities say. The incident occurred in March when a group of teens repeatedly knocked on a homeowner’s door late at night and ran away. The homeowner, believing his property was being targeted, fired a gun, hitting one of the boys.

According to Louisville Metro Police, the injured teen was hospitalized but survived. While the homeowner’s actions remain under investigation, prosecutors have decided to charge the boy with third-degree criminal mischief, a misdemeanor in Kentucky. Officials stated that the charge stems from property damage allegedly caused during the prank.

The case has sparked debate about the balance between self-defense and excessive force, as well as the legal consequences for juvenile pranks. Some argue that while “ding dong ditching” is typically harmless, it can escalate in dangerous ways. Others question whether the homeowner’s use of a firearm was justified.

Legal experts suggest that the homeowner could face charges if authorities determine he acted unreasonably. Kentucky’s self-defense laws, including the “stand your ground” statute, allow property owners to use force in certain situations, but shooting at pranksters may not meet the legal threshold.

Meanwhile, the teen and his family are considering legal action against the homeowner. His attorney argues that being shot is far worse than any mischief he may have committed. The case is ongoing, and both the teen and the homeowner could face further legal consequences.
