FOCUS | LMPD Tow Lot Employees Seen Taking Items from Cars Marked for Auction

Louisville, KY – Employees at the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) tow lot have been caught on camera removing items from vehicles set to be auctioned, raising concerns about potential misconduct. Witnesses report seeing workers taking personal belongings from cars before they go up for public sale.

Sources familiar with the situation say that some employees have been seen carrying bags filled with items, including electronics, tools, and other valuables. One witness, who wished to remain anonymous, said, “I’ve seen them going through the cars like it’s a garage sale. It doesn’t seem right.”

The LMPD tow lot processes hundreds of impounded vehicles each month, with many being auctioned if left unclaimed. By law, personal items inside the vehicles should be logged and stored before auction or returned to the owners. However, allegations suggest that some employees are helping themselves instead.

LMPD officials have not yet commented on the allegations, but an internal investigation may be underway. If misconduct is confirmed, employees could face disciplinary action or criminal charges.

For now, the community is left with questions about oversight and accountability. “If they’re doing this in plain sight, what else is happening behind closed doors?” another witness asked.

Anyone with information about the alleged misconduct is encouraged to contact LMPD’s Professional Standards Unit or submit an anonymous tip.
