Michael Maguire Responds to Payne Haas’ Potential Big-Money Move to Sydney NRL Club
Kangaroos coach Michael Maguire has weighed in on speculation surrounding Payne Haas, after reports emerged linking the Brisbane Broncos superstar with a lucrative move to a Sydney-based NRL team.
Haas, widely regarded as one of the game’s most dominant forwards, is reportedly being targeted by multiple clubs willing to offer a massive deal to lure him away from Brisbane. The Broncos are keen to retain their marquee prop, but with rival clubs circling, speculation is growing that the New South Wales-born enforcer could make a shock switch.
Maguire, who also serves as the NSW Blues coach, remained diplomatic when addressing the situation but acknowledged Haas’ immense value.
“Payne is an outstanding player, and any club would love to have him,” Maguire said. “He’s been a key part of the Broncos and has shown his quality at both club and representative level. Whatever decision he makes will be the best one for him and his future.”
The 24-year-old is off contract at the end of 2024, and while Brisbane has tabled a rich extension offer, rival clubs are believed to be prepared to go even higher. The Sydney Roosters and Canterbury Bulldogs have both been linked with Haas, with suggestions he could command a deal worth over $1.2 million per season.
Haas has previously stated his desire to win a premiership, and if he believes a move will help him achieve that goal, a switch to Sydney could become a real possibility.
For now, Maguire is focused on his representative duties, with Haas expected to be a key figure in NSW’s State of Origin campaign under his leadership.
