Lane Kiffin Recaps Ole Miss’ First Preseason Scrimmage
Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin provided his thoughts on the Rebels’ first preseason scrimmage, offering insights into the team’s performance as they prepare for the upcoming season. Speaking to reporters, Kiffin highlighted key takeaways, both positives and areas needing improvement.
One of the biggest storylines heading into the scrimmage was the quarterback competition. Returning starter Jaxson Dart took the majority of first-team reps, but transfer quarterbacks, including former LSU signal-caller Walker Howard and Oklahoma State’s Spencer Sanders, also saw action. Kiffin noted that all three had moments of success but emphasized the need for more consistency.
The offense, which has been a strength under Kiffin, showed flashes of explosiveness. Running back Quinshon Judkins, one of the SEC’s top rushers last season, looked sharp, breaking off several big runs. Wide receivers Tre Harris and Jordan Watkins also made plays downfield. However, Kiffin pointed out that there were too many turnovers, something the team will need to clean up before the season opener.
On the defensive side, Kiffin praised the unit’s energy and physicality. The Rebels, under new defensive coordinator Pete Golding, showed improved tackling and forced multiple turnovers. The defensive line, led by JJ Pegues and Jared Ivey, applied consistent pressure on the quarterbacks. Kiffin acknowledged that while the defense made strides, they still need to work on limiting explosive plays.
Special teams were also a focal point, with Kiffin noting that the kicking game needs more consistency.
Overall, Kiffin was pleased with the effort but stressed that there is still plenty of work to be done before the season kicks off. With another scrimmage on the horizon, the Rebels will look to build on this performance as they fine-tune their roster and schemes.
