Matt McMahon Opens Up About Rebuild at LSU

LSU head basketball coach Matt McMahon understands the challenges of rebuilding a once-proud program. After taking over in 2022 following a tumultuous period marked by NCAA sanctions and roster turnover, McMahon has been tasked with restoring the Tigers to national prominence. Now, entering his third season, he remains optimistic about the future despite the ups and downs of the rebuilding process.

In a recent interview, McMahon acknowledged the difficulties of constructing a competitive roster in today’s college basketball landscape, especially with the transfer portal and NIL dynamics reshaping the sport. “Rebuilding in this era is different than it used to be,” McMahon said. “It’s about balancing development with bringing in experienced players who can help right away.”

His first two seasons in Baton Rouge have been a mix of struggles and progress. LSU finished with losing records in both years, but McMahon has focused on instilling a culture of toughness and accountability. Recruiting has been a key part of that, as he continues to bring in talent through both high school commitments and transfers.

“We’re building something sustainable,” McMahon said. “The goal is to develop guys who want to be part of LSU basketball long-term while also finding the right pieces to compete immediately.”

While the road back to SEC contention hasn’t been easy, McMahon remains confident in his vision. With a new wave of recruits and transfers set to bolster the roster, he believes the Tigers are close to turning the corner.

“Our fans deserve a winner, and that’s what we’re working toward every single day,” he added. “It’s not about quick fixes—it’s about building a program that can sustain success.”

As McMahon enters a crucial year, LSU fans will be watching closely to see if his rebuild takes the next step.
