Ivan Cleary Blindsided by James Fisher-Harris’ Transfer Request

Penrith Panthers coach Ivan Cleary has admitted he was caught off guard by star forward James Fisher-Harris’ request for a transfer, a move that could significantly impact the club’s future.

Fisher-Harris, a key figure in Penrith’s recent premiership dominance, has reportedly asked for a release to return to New Zealand, citing family reasons as the driving factor behind his decision. The powerhouse prop has been a cornerstone of the Panthers’ pack, playing a crucial role in their three consecutive NRL titles from 2021 to 2023.

Speaking to the media, Cleary acknowledged the unexpected nature of the request.

“To be honest, it came as a bit of a shock,” Cleary said. “James has been such an integral part of our club for years, and we hadn’t seen this coming. But at the same time, we respect his situation and understand that family always comes first.”

The Panthers have yet to formally confirm whether they will grant the request, but sources indicate discussions are ongoing. Fisher-Harris is contracted until the end of 2026, meaning any potential move would likely require negotiations with both the Panthers and a prospective club, possibly the New Zealand Warriors.

Fisher-Harris, a proud Kiwi international, has been a leader both on and off the field for Penrith. His departure would leave a significant void in the squad, particularly in the forward pack, where his aggression, work rate, and leadership have been instrumental in their success.

While Cleary and the club weigh their options, the Panthers will have to consider how to replace one of their most influential players should Fisher-Harris’ request be granted.
