As of February 26, 2025, Brisbane Broncos’ dynamic winger Selwyn Cobbo remains under contract with the club until the end of the 2025 NRL season. Despite earlier reports suggesting a possible contract extension, negotiations have been paused to allow Cobbo to focus on his performance and fitness under new head coach Michael Maguire.
In mid-2024, Cobbo had attracted significant interest from rival clubs, with some offers reportedly reaching up to $1 million per season. However, he chose to stay with the Broncos, signing a two-year extension that secured his position until the conclusion of the 2025 season. This decision underscored his commitment to the club and its future prospects.
The arrival of coach Michael Maguire has introduced a renewed emphasis on player development and accountability. Maguire has publicly challenged Cobbo to harness his “special qualities” and achieve consistent, high-level performances. He emphasized that Cobbo’s future with the Broncos would be determined by his dedication and actions on the field, stating, “His actions on the footy field will do the talking.”
The Broncos are currently navigating salary cap constraints, especially after securing key players like fullback Reece Walsh on a record four-year, $5 million deal, and veteran playmaker Ben Hunt on a two-year contract worth $600,000 per season. These significant financial commitments have inevitably impacted the club’s ability to offer immediate extensions to other talents, including Cobbo and center Kotoni Staggs. Both players are integral to the team’s structure and have expressed a desire to continue their tenure with the Broncos. However, the club must strategically manage its resources to retain its core lineup.
Teammates have also voiced their support for Cobbo and Staggs. Winger Jesse Arthars highlighted their importance to the team’s culture and success, expressing hope that the club can retain both players despite the financial challenges posed by rival offers. Arthars noted, “I don’t want to see them leave. They’re obviously great mates of mine and they bring a lot of culture to this club as well.”
As the 2025 NRL season approaches, Cobbo’s focus remains on delivering strong performances and maintaining peak fitness. His commitment to the Broncos and response to the challenges set by Coach Maguire will be pivotal in determining his future with the club beyond the current contract period.
