The Tampa Bay Rays have signed infielder Jamie Westbrook to a minor league contract, extending an invitation to spring training. Westbrook, 29, made his Major League Baseball debut with the Boston Red Sox in 2024 after an 11-season journey through the minor leagues. During his stint with the Red Sox, he appeared in 21 games, recording a .150 batting average with two home runs and seven RBIs.
Prior to his major league debut, Westbrook showcased consistent performance in the minors. In 2024, he played 102 games for the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox, achieving a .277 batting average, 12 home runs, and 71 RBIs. Throughout his minor league career, spanning 1,212 games, he maintained a .279 batting average with 132 home runs and 635 RBIs.
Westbrook’s defensive versatility is a notable asset. While primarily a second baseman, he has also logged innings at first base, third base, and in the outfield. This flexibility enhances his value to the Rays, who are seeking depth and adaptability within their roster.
Reflecting on his MLB debut, Westbrook expressed a renewed perspective on the game: “You spend that long in the minor leagues, you start to believe that it’s not going to happen. (It) just kind of validates what I’ve always thought of myself. I feel like I can come in and just, like, be me. I know my good is good enough now, so just do that. And I definitely have a new perspective on playing ball. I’m not necessarily trying to get to the big leagues so hard. I’ve kind of loosened the grip, and I can just enjoy the game now.”
The Rays’ infield has undergone significant changes recently. In January 2025, they signed infielder Ha-Seong Kim to a two-year, $29 million contract. Kim, 29, is expected to take over shortstop duties upon his return from shoulder surgery in May. His signing addresses the void left by Wander Franco, who has been absent from the lineup since 2023 due to legal issues.
Westbrook’s addition provides the Rays with a seasoned player capable of contributing both offensively and defensively. As spring training progresses, his performance will determine his role within the organization, potentially offering the team valuable infield depth for the upcoming season.
