The New Orleans Saints have appointed Doug Nussmeier as their new offensive coordinator, reuniting him with head coach Kellen Moore. This marks Nussmeier’s first role as an NFL offensive coordinator, though Moore has confirmed he will continue to call the offensive plays.
Nussmeier, 54, has a longstanding professional relationship with Moore, having worked together for the past seven seasons. Their collaboration began with the Dallas Cowboys, where Nussmeier served as the quarterbacks coach from 2020 to 2022, while Moore was the offensive coordinator. They continued their partnership with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2023 and the Philadelphia Eagles in 2024, contributing to the Eagles’ Super Bowl LIX victory.
Before his coaching career, Nussmeier was drafted by the Saints in 1994 as a quarterback out of Idaho. His return to New Orleans is both a professional and personal milestone, as he will be closer to his son, Garrett Nussmeier, who is the starting quarterback at LSU.
In his new role, Nussmeier will work closely with Moore to develop the Saints’ offense, focusing on optimizing quarterback performance. This hire is part of Moore’s broader strategy to enhance the team’s offensive capabilities, with a particular emphasis on quarterback development.
The Saints’ decision to bring Nussmeier on board reflects their commitment to building a strong coaching staff capable of revitalizing the team’s offensive performance in the upcoming season.
