Denny Hamlin, a three-time Daytona 500 champion, showcased his prowess by leading the first practice session for the 2024 Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway. Piloting his No. 11 FedEx Toyota Camry for Joe Gibbs Racing, Hamlin clocked a top speed of 197.477 mph, completing a lap in 45.575 seconds.
The session highlighted Toyota’s dominance, as the manufacturer secured the top eight positions on the speed charts. Erik Jones of LEGACY MOTOR CLUB was a close second, registering a speed of 197.468 mph. Following him were Christopher Bell (197.429 mph), Ty Gibbs (197.394 mph), and John Hunter Nemechek (197.33 mph), all driving Toyota Camrys.
This performance underscores the strategic collaboration among Toyota teams. Hamlin, along with his Toyota counterparts from Joe Gibbs Racing, LEGACY MOTOR CLUB, and 23XI Racing, worked in unison during the 50-minute session. Their coordinated drafting efforts not only secured top spots but also demonstrated the strength of their alliance.
In contrast, Ford and Chevrolet teams trailed behind. Michael McDowell was the fastest Ford driver, placing ninth with a speed of 194.569 mph, while Austin Dillon led the Chevrolet contingent, finishing 15th at 193.919 mph.
The practice session proceeded without major incidents. Notably, Chris Buescher was absent as he returned to North Carolina for the birth of his second child. Veteran driver David Ragan stepped in, completing four laps in Buescher’s No. 17 Ford, achieving a best speed of 181.053 mph.
Hamlin’s impressive start in the initial practice sets a promising tone for the upcoming Daytona 500. His performance not only highlights his individual skill but also the collective strength and coordination of the Toyota teams as they prepare for the “Great American Race.”
