NEW DEAL: Brisbane Broncos head coach Michael Maguire have set to confirm new deal with Selwyn Cobbo for the 2025 NRL season.

Brisbane Broncos head coach Michael Maguire and star winger Selwyn Cobbo for the 2025 NRL season. Cobbo remains contracted with the Broncos until the end of 2025, but discussions regarding an extension have been deferred. This delay is partly due to the Broncos’ recent significant signings, including a $4.4 million extension for fullback Reece Walsh and the acquisition of veteran playmaker Ben Hunt on a two-year deal worth $600,000 per season.

The Broncos are now focusing on retaining key players like Cobbo and center Kotoni Staggs. Both have expressed a desire to remain with the club, but salary cap constraints present challenges. Winger Jesse Arthars emphasized their importance to the team’s culture and leadership, noting Staggs’ role as a captain and leader within the squad.

Despite the Broncos’ intention to retain Cobbo, rival clubs have shown interest in the 22-year-old Maroons star. Reports indicate that two Sydney-based clubs and a third NRL team have inquired about Cobbo’s availability, recognizing his versatility and game-changing abilities. Currently earning around $650,000, Cobbo could command a higher salary on the open market.

New head coach Michael Maguire has challenged Cobbo to realize his full potential, emphasizing the importance of fitness and consistent performance. Maguire stated, “If Selwyn focuses on the training part, most of the contract stuff will sort itself out—it always does.” He expressed confidence in Cobbo’s abilities and highlighted the importance of his contributions to the team’s success.

As the 2025 season approaches, the Broncos face the dual challenge of managing salary cap pressures while striving to retain their key players. The outcome of these negotiations will significantly impact the team’s performance and cohesion in the upcoming season.
