Brisbane Broncos’ five-eighth, Ezra Mam, has accepted a nine-game suspension and a total of $120,000 in fines following a serious driving incident in October 2024. The suspension means Mam will be sidelined until Round 10 of the 2025 NRL season, delaying his return to the field until the Broncos face South Sydney.
The incident occurred on October 18, 2024, when Mam was involved in a head-on collision in Brisbane’s Bardon suburb. Subsequent tests revealed the presence of cocaine and other substances in his system, and it was discovered that he was driving with a suspended license due to prior demerit point accumulations. The crash resulted in injuries to a woman and her young daughter, who suffered a fractured hip and seatbelt burns.
In December 2024, Mam pleaded guilty to charges of driving without a license and driving under the influence of drugs. He was fined $850 and received a six-month driving disqualification; however, no conviction was recorded, a decision that sparked public criticism for its perceived leniency.
The NRL issued Mam a breach notice, alleging conduct detrimental to the game and his club. The league imposed a $30,000 fine and a nine-game suspension. The Brisbane Broncos supplemented this with an additional $90,000 fine and mandated that Mam complete a safer driving training program, engage in ongoing work or study placements, and participate in a tailored wellbeing support program.
Broncos CEO Dave Donaghy emphasized the gravity of Mam’s actions, stating, “Whilst we are extremely disappointed that we have been placed in this position, we believe both the NRL and Club-imposed penalties adequately reflect the gravity of what’s transpired and should act as a deterrent from this type of risky and anti-social behaviour.” He acknowledged Mam’s acceptance of responsibility and his commitment to personal rehabilitation.
In the aftermath of the incident, Mam entered a rehabilitation program and has been participating in counseling sessions. He has expressed deep remorse for his actions and has committed to making amends. The Broncos have affirmed their support for Mam during this period, focusing on his personal development and reintegration into the team.
The suspension of Mam, a pivotal player for the Broncos, poses a significant challenge for the team’s lineup in the early stages of the 2025 season. To mitigate his absence, the Broncos have signed Ben Hunt, who is expected to partner with Adam Reynolds in the halves. Upon Mam’s return, it is anticipated that Hunt will transition to the hooker position, sharing duties with Billy Walters.
This incident underscores the serious consequences of off-field misconduct and the importance of personal responsibility among professional athletes. The Broncos and the NRL have taken a firm stance, implementing substantial penalties and support measures to address the issue and prevent future occurrences.
