Former Wallabies star Jordan Petaia has announced his departure from rugby union to pursue a career in the National Football League (NFL) in the United States. At 24, Petaia will join the NFL’s International Player Pathway (IPP) program, participating in a 10-week training camp in Florida starting in January 2025. His goal is to secure a spot on an NFL roster, following in the footsteps of fellow Australian Jordan Mailata, who successfully transitioned from rugby to the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Petaia’s decision comes after fulfilling his contract with the Queensland Reds and recovering from a shoulder injury. He has earned 31 caps for Australia and participated in two Rugby World Cups. Despite opportunities to play against the British and Irish Lions, Petaia felt it was the right time to chase his NFL dream. He expressed gratitude to his former rugby teams and is eager to embark on this new chapter in his sports career.
Raised in a Samoan household, Petaia has been a longtime NFL fan, inspired by players like Troy Polamalu. His versatile rugby experience, having played various positions, aligns with potential NFL roles such as wide receiver or tight end. He will train at the NFL Academy campus on the Gold Coast before heading to the U.S.
Petaia’s move reflects a growing trend of rugby players exploring opportunities in American football, attracted by the challenge and the potential for lucrative contracts. His journey will be closely watched by both rugby and NFL enthusiasts as he attempts to make his mark in a new sport.
