Alabama’s defense received a significant boost with the announcement that linebacker Deontae Lawson will return for his redshirt senior season in 2025. Lawson, who has been a pivotal figure for the Crimson Tide, shared his decision on social media, expressing his commitment to completing his journey at Alabama and his aspiration to secure a national championship.

Throughout his tenure, Lawson has been instrumental in anchoring Alabama’s defense. In the 2024 season, despite suffering a season-ending knee injury during a road game against Oklahoma, he amassed 76 tackles, ranking second on the team. His contributions also included 6.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, four pass breakups, an interception, and a forced fumble. Over his career, Lawson has participated in 37 games, establishing himself as a consistent and reliable presence on the field.

Lawson’s leadership extends beyond his on-field performance. He was voted a permanent team captain by his peers prior to the 2024 season and has been a semifinalist for the Butkus Award, which honors the nation’s top linebacker, for two consecutive years. His role as the defensive signal-caller underscores his importance to the team’s strategic execution.

His return is particularly timely as Alabama prepares to navigate the departures of key players to the NFL Draft. Notably, linebacker Jihaad Campbell, who led the team in tackles, tackles for loss, and sacks in 2024, has declared for the draft.  Lawson’s experience and leadership will be invaluable in maintaining continuity and performance within the linebacker unit.

Looking ahead, Lawson will lead an inside linebacker group that includes returning player Justin Jefferson, who has also announced his return for the 2025 season. The team is further bolstered by the addition of Colorado transfer Nikhai Hill-Green and a trio of incoming freshmen. These developments position Alabama’s defense to remain formidable in the upcoming season.

Lawson’s decision to return reflects his dedication to both his personal development and the team’s success. He emphasized his desire to finish what he started at Alabama, highlighting his commitment to winning a national championship and his appreciation for the university community.

In summary, Deontae Lawson’s return fortifies Alabama’s defense, providing leadership and experience that will be crucial as the team aims for national prominence in the 2025 season.
