In a surprising turn of events, Brisbane Broncos Head Coach Kevin Walters has announced his immediate resignation after a four-year tenure with the club. Walters, a celebrated figure in Broncos history, both as a player and coach, cited personal reasons for his departure. He emphasized the toll that coaching in the NRL takes not only on the individual but also on their family, expressing a desire to spend quality time with his loved ones who have supported him throughout his coaching journey.

Walters took the helm at the end of 2020, inheriting a team that had just experienced its first wooden spoon. Under his guidance, the Broncos showed significant improvement, culminating in a grand final appearance in 2023. Reflecting on his tenure, Walters stated, “We have come a long way from the wooden spoon to last year’s run to the grand final.” However, the 2024 season proved challenging, with the team finishing 12th and missing the finals, leading to increased scrutiny and pressure.

Broncos CEO Dave Donaghy expressed gratitude for Walters’ contributions, acknowledging the passion and dedication he brought to the role. Donaghy noted, “Kevin put his heart and soul into the club during his time as coach. He is one of the most passionate people you will ever meet when it comes to the Broncos and that helped lift us out of a really difficult time.” He also hinted at the possibility of Walters remaining involved with the club in some capacity, stating, “While we will miss Kev and his infectious personality on a daily basis, we certainly don’t want one of the Broncos’ favourite sons not to stay involved with our great club.”

The announcement has elicited mixed reactions from players and fans alike. Veteran player Corey Oates revealed that he learned of Walters’ departure through the news, describing the decision as a “harsh call” and expressing empathy for Walters and his family.  Fans have also been divided, with some supporting the move due to the team’s recent performance, while others believe that the players should be held more accountable for the on-field results.

In the wake of Walters’ resignation, the Broncos have acted swiftly to appoint Michael Maguire as the new Head Coach on a three-year contract. Maguire brings a wealth of experience, having previously led the South Sydney Rabbitohs to a premiership in 2014 and coaching the New Zealand national team. He expressed enthusiasm about taking on the role, stating, “The Broncos are one of rugby league’s great clubs and it will be an honour to step into the role of Head Coach.”

As the Broncos prepare for the upcoming 2025 season, the club and its supporters are hopeful that this leadership change will usher in a new era of success and stability.
