SHOCKED: New York Mets agree to contract with former Chicago Cubs closer… See more

The New York Mets have recently made strategic moves to bolster their pitching staff by signing former closers from other teams. Notably, they have agreed to contracts with former Chicago Cubs reliever Adbert Alzolay and former New York Yankees closer Clay Holmes.

On January 24, 2025, the Mets signed right-hander Adbert Alzolay to a two-year minor league contract. Alzolay, 29, underwent Tommy John surgery in late August 2024 and is expected to miss most of the 2025 season as he recovers. He had a standout season with the Cubs in 2023, recording 22 saves and a 2.67 ERA. However, his performance declined in 2024, posting a 4.67 ERA through mid-May before a forearm strain ended his season and led to surgery. Following these setbacks, the Cubs designated him for assignment.

In December 2024, the Mets also signed former Yankees closer Clay Holmes to a three-year, $38 million contract, with an opt-out option after the second year. Holmes, 31, had a career-high 30 saves with the Yankees in the 2024 season, earning his second All-Star appearance. Despite his success as a reliever, the Mets plan to transition Holmes into a starting pitcher role. Holmes last served as a starter in 2018 during his rookie year with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He expressed a desire to return to starting after working on new pitches last season. The Mets, in need of strong starters, see potential in Holmes to provide around 160 innings per season.

These signings reflect the Mets’ strategy of acquiring pitchers with high potential, despite recent injuries or role changes. By investing in Alzolay and Holmes, the Mets aim to strengthen their pitching depth for future seasons.
