The Dallas Cowboys have promoted offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer to head coach, succeeding Mike McCarthy after his five-year tenure. Schottenheimer, 51, has been with the Cowboys since 2022, initially serving as a consultant before becoming the offensive coordinator in 2023.
Schottenheimer’s coaching career spans over two decades, including roles as offensive coordinator for the New York Jets, St. Louis Rams, and Seattle Seahawks. He also served as the passing game coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021. (
The decision to promote Schottenheimer was influenced by his leadership qualities and established rapport with quarterback Dak Prescott. Owner Jerry Jones valued Schottenheimer’s ability to command the room and maintain continuity within the offensive system.
However, the move has faced criticism. Former Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant expressed skepticism, suggesting that the team should not expect success under Schottenheimer’s leadership.
Schottenheimer’s appointment comes after a disappointing 7-10 season, during which the Cowboys missed the playoffs. His task will be to revitalize the team and end the franchise’s nearly three-decade-long absence from the NFC Championship game.
