HE’S BACK: Robert saleh headed back to San Francisco as defensive coordinator…see more

Robert Saleh is set to return to the San Francisco 49ers as their defensive coordinator, a role he previously held from 2017 to 2020. During his initial tenure, Saleh transformed the 49ers’ defense into one of the league’s most formidable units, culminating in a Super Bowl appearance after the 2019 season. His innovative defensive strategies and leadership were instrumental in the team’s success during that period.

Following his successful stint with the 49ers, Saleh was appointed as the head coach of the New York Jets in 2021. Over three-plus seasons, he amassed a 20-36 record before being dismissed in October 2024 after a 2-3 start to the season. Despite his efforts, the Jets did not secure a postseason berth during his tenure. After his departure from the Jets, Saleh briefly served as a consultant for the Green Bay Packers.

The 49ers’ decision to rehire Saleh comes after the team parted ways with defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen, who was let go after a single season. Under Sorensen, the 49ers’ defense ranked eighth in total defense, allowing 317.4 yards per game, but struggled in scoring defense, placing 29th by conceding 25.6 points per game. The team’s overall performance in the 2024 season was disappointing, ending with a 6-11 record and a last-place finish in the NFC West.

Saleh’s return is anticipated to revitalize the 49ers’ defense, bringing back the aggressive and disciplined approach that previously led to significant success. His familiarity with head coach Kyle Shanahan and the organization’s culture is expected to facilitate a seamless transition. The 49ers are optimistic that Saleh’s leadership will restore their defense to its former dominance and help the team rebound in the upcoming season.
