UNBELIEVABLE: Brisbane Broncos head coach Michael Maguire has broken his silence on the Ezra Mam saga captain deal against the 2025 NRL season… See more

Brisbane Broncos head coach Michael Maguire has addressed the recent controversy involving five-eighth Ezra Mam, confirming that the young playmaker will remain with the club despite facing serious charges. Mam was involved in a head-on car collision in October 2024, after which he allegedly failed a roadside drug test and was found to be unlicensed. The incident resulted in injuries to a mother and her four-year-old daughter, who were passengers in the other vehicle.

Following the accident, Mam voluntarily entered a rehabilitation facility to address his personal issues. Coach Maguire has been in contact with Mam during this period and emphasized the importance of supporting the player through his rehabilitation. Maguire stated, “The reason you go to rehab—you go in there to bring change to your life and understand yourself and know how grateful we are for the things we have.”

Maguire also highlighted the need for a thorough review of the incident before making any decisions regarding Mam’s future with the Broncos. He remarked, “We need to make sure we are slow about our decisions because we have to see everything for what it is. It’s a big incident and it’s not taken lightly, but Ezra is working on himself and making sure he is going through his process.”

The Broncos are collaborating with the NRL Integrity Unit to determine appropriate sanctions for Mam. While the legal process is ongoing, it is anticipated that Mam could face a suspension ranging from two to three months, potentially sidelining him for the first 8 to 12 rounds of the 2025 NRL season.

In the interim, the Broncos have secured the return of veteran playmaker Ben Hunt on a two-year deal. Hunt, who began his career with the Broncos, is expected to bring leadership and experience to the squad, especially during Mam’s absence. Coach Maguire expressed optimism about Hunt’s impact, stating that his addition positions the Broncos as strong contenders for the upcoming season.

Maguire is also focused on reinforcing the club’s culture and standards. He acknowledged the challenges ahead, noting, “Culture makes great organisations so we have to all take ownership for what’s going on.” The coach aims to use this incident as a catalyst for positive change within the team, emphasizing accountability and personal growth.

As the situation develops, the Broncos are committed to supporting Mam’s rehabilitation while ensuring that appropriate measures are taken to uphold the club’s values and integrity. The focus remains on preparing for the 2025 NRL season with a reinforced squad and a renewed commitment to excellence both on and off the field.
