Siya Kolisi: Latest on Springboks captain’s Stormers return as Sharks throw spanner in the works….

Recent speculation has suggested that Springbok captain Siya Kolisi might leave the Sharks to rejoin the Stormers, primarily due to personal reasons, including his family’s relocation to Cape Town. However, as of January 14, 2025, both the Sharks and Kolisi have dismissed these rumors, affirming his commitment to the Durban-based franchise.

Kolisi, who began his professional career with Western Province and the Stormers, transitioned to the Sharks in February 2021. In January 2023, he signed with French club Racing 92 but returned to the Sharks in September 2024 after a season abroad. His contract with the Sharks extends until 2027, and the franchise has expressed no intention of releasing him prematurely.

The recent rumors gained traction due to Kolisi’s family’s move back to Cape Town, leading to speculation about his potential return to the Stormers. However, the Sharks’ management has firmly denied any discussions or plans regarding his departure. Head coach John Plumtree addressed the situation, stating that while Kolisi’s family considerations are acknowledged, there have been no formal talks about a transfer.

Stormers head coach John Dobson also commented on the speculation, noting that while the idea of Kolisi’s return is appealing, there have been no official discussions or approaches made. He emphasized that any such move would require careful consideration, especially given the Stormers’ current focus on developing emerging talent and managing their budget constraints.

Kolisi’s recent performances with the Sharks have been noteworthy. In a United Rugby Championship match against the Stormers in Cape Town, he led the Sharks and played a pivotal role, despite the team’s narrow 24-20 defeat. His leadership and on-field contributions continue to be invaluable assets to the Sharks’ squad.

In summary, while personal factors have fueled speculation about Siya Kolisi’s potential return to the Stormers, both the Sharks and Kolisi have reiterated his commitment to fulfilling his contract in Durban. As of now, there are no official plans or discussions indicating a transfer back to Cape Town.
