Reece Walsh’s Final Speech on Retirement
As I stand before you today, reflecting on my journey, it feels surreal to even be saying this. After everything I’ve been through, after all the highs and lows, I’ve made the decision to retire from rugby league. It’s not something I took lightly, but it’s the right moment for me and my family.
When I first started playing the game, I could never have imagined that I would reach this point. From my early days on the field, to making my debut with the Brisbane Broncos, to representing my country, every single step has been a dream come true. I’m incredibly proud of everything I’ve achieved, and there’s a part of me that feels a little emotional about it all coming to an end. But at the same time, I feel a sense of fulfillment and peace.
I’ve been fortunate to have played alongside some of the best athletes in the game. My teammates, coaches, and support staff have been amazing throughout my career. I’ve learned so much from each of you, and I’ll forever be grateful for the wisdom and guidance you’ve given me. The Broncos family will always hold a special place in my heart. You’ve supported me through thick and thin, and I’ve always felt at home here.
To the fans, thank you for your unwavering support. The passion you bring to every game, the cheers and the chants, have been a constant source of motivation. You made me want to be better every time I took the field. I’ve never taken that for granted, and I hope you know how much you’ve meant to me throughout my career.
Looking back, it’s clear that rugby league has taught me more than just the game. It’s about discipline, resilience, and pushing through the tough times. It’s about representing your family, your team, and your community. I’ve seen my fair share of challenges on and off the field, but I’m proud of how far I’ve come, and I’m grateful for the lessons along the way.
I’m excited about the next chapter of my life, and while I may be stepping away from playing, rugby will always be a part of who I am. I’m looking forward to giving back to the game in whatever way I can. But for now, I’m going to enjoy the rest of this season, share a few more moments with my teammates, and soak it all in.
Thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey. It’s been an honor, and I’ll carry these memories with me forever.
Reece Walsh.
