On Saturday, Cam Ward is expected to break a Miami record and reach a milestone never before reached in the program’s history.
Two weeks ago, Cam Ward quietly set the Miami single-season record for total yards in the team’s 28-23 loss to Georgia Tech. Against Wake Forest on Saturday, Ward has the potential to set the all-division lifetime touchdown pass record and is on track to set the Miami single-season passing yards record.
Ward passed Malik Rosier, who set the Miami single-season record with 3,588 total yards in 2017, with 3,686 yards in 2024 after having 348 passing yards and minus five rushing yards against Georgia Tech. In 2024, Ward averages 367.6 total yards per game, and on Saturday, he should become the first Miami athlete to reach 4,000 yards in a season.
Ward has 3,494 passing yards in 2024 going into Saturday’s game against Wake Forest, which puts him third in Miami history. Brad Kaaya’s 3,532 passing yards in 2016 put him second in Miami history. With 3,642 yards in 1984, Bernie Kosar set the Miami single-season passing yardage record. At some point during the second half, Ward should surpass Kosar in the first half and achieve 4,000 total yards for the second time.
Ward is on track to become the first Miami quarterback to record more over 4,000 yards in a season when the Miami Dolphins play Syracuse in the regular season finale on November 30.
Ward had a total of 151 passing touchdowns during his time at FCS Incarnate Word, Miami, and Washington State, according to J.C. Shelton of Athlon Sports. From 2007 to 2011, Houston’s Case Keenum set the career record with 155 passing touchdowns. Against Wake Forest, Ward has a great chance to tie the career touchdown record. Ward’s 32 touchdown throws already set the Miami single-season record. With 29, Steve Walsh had previously held the record. Ward should have the chance to become the first quarterback for the Hurricanes to record 40 touchdown passes in a season if Miami advances to the ACC Championship game.
In three weeks, Ward is expected to be in New York for the Heisman Trophy Ceremony. The only Miami Heisman Trophy winners are Gino Torretta in 1992 and Vinny Testaverde in 1986. The only other Miami quarterback to be a finalist for the Heisman Trophy is Ken Dorsey. Ward is having the best season of any Miami quarterback in history.
